Tripura fought with determination to hold Orissa to a draw on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. Orissa, however, collected 13 points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Tripura bagged six points.
Century each by captain Karun Dubey, Devashish Mahanti and half-century by Swapan Mitra helped Orissa declare at 430 for eight after they won the toss and chose to bat. Dubey and Mahanti stitched together 250 runs in their partnership for the second wicket. Mahanti’s 128 was his first century in first-class cricket.
In reply, Tripura were bowled out for 222 with Harmohan Praharaj and Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra bagging five wickets each for Orissa. Sourav Dasgupta was the top scorer for Tripura with a patient knock of 75.
Forced to follow on, after conceding a first-innings lead of 208 runs, Tripura escaped defeat by making 54 for four at stumps on the final day. Orissa left-arm spinner Mahipal Saudagar made his first-class debut in this match. He bowled a memorable 10-over spell in the second innings, picking up two wickets for one run.
